Ignoring the Obvious: A Cultivated Skill

It's fascinating how human beings get so accustomed to certain things in their lives, they don't notice them anymore. I wonder, is this something to be thankful for? That our brains have the ability to gloss over the unpleasant aspects that surround us? Or is this something we should worry about? Our attention and retention spans seem to be deteriorating, and we can miss out on so many things life has to offer if we go on this way...
One time, I went to meet an old friend of my father's, who had the misfortune of living smack dab between two chemical factories. Of course, there are the usual disadvantages to living in such a place, chemical runoff, polluted air etc...but the one that struck me as the worst side effect of living in that house was the noise. Not just the hustle and bustle of the traffic, and workers going to and from work. No, it was something much worse. At the end of each day, two sirens would simultaneously go off at the end of the work day, to let the factory workers know that it was time to go home. To say that this startled me would be a huge understatement...the sound was deafening! So after an awkward few minutes, when the sirens finally faded away, I asked my host, how could he tolerate the siren's noise every day? He gave me a surprised look and asked, "Oh, it rang already?"
This must be the case where ignorance is bliss...what say?
